Weeks of June, 2007, Psalm 8

One of the great psalms is Psalm 8 - an attempt at describing God and our place in God's universe:
1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?
5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Dear Lord, how great you are! How majestic is Your name in all the earth! Your glory surrounds the heavens. You are in the midst of our praises, even from children – as they praise You – they silence the evil one. In the midst of praise, Your glory and Your presence surrounds us all.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, all the things You have set in place, what is my place in Your universe. How do I fit in?

But Father, You made us humans a little lower than the heavenly beings, and we are crowned with glory and honor. You made us rule over the works of Your hands. You put everything under our feet – all the flocks and herds, the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea. Lord, may I be a good steward of Your creation. May I respect it. And may all of the beauty in Your creation bring me back to You – O Lord, my Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth.

Thanks for Your love, Your peace, Your comfort, Your presence with us always. Amen.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

May God, our majestic God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit surround you with peace now and always.
