Week of October 11, 2009, Hebrews 4:12-16

One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from Hebrews, chapter 4, verses 12 to 16 – the writer of Hebrews reminds us of the power of the Word of God, and how because of Jesus Christ we can come right into the presence of our Holy God.
12For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Dear Jesus – You are the Living Word made flesh. You are alive and always active in our lives. Your word has power, to accomplish what You want to accomplish, and because it is sharper than any double-edged sword. You can penetrate even to dividing of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow – an impossibility for us to do, but with You, all things are possible. You know us intimately, our inmost thoughts and attitudes of our hearts. When we stand before You, Lord, we will be judged. Nothing is hidden from You. Jesus, You are our High Priest, who has suffered, died and rose again.

Jesus, we cling to Your cross, the cross of suffering, the cross of glory, the cross of power, because You know each one of us - what we go through in life. Jesus, You know us as human beings and You know the temptations that we face, because You also were tempted. And because You were without sin as You walked on this earth, You are our Encourager then and now, through Your lifestyle, through Your Word.

Jesus, remind us that we can always approach Your throne of grace with confidence, to be in Your presence, to receive mercy, to find grace to help us in our time of need, to receive the great peace that You give.

Thank You for Your love and mercy, Your presence and Your peace. Amen.

May the Lord bless you as you go on your way. May He go before you to show you the way. May He go behind you to encourage you. May He go beside you to guide and befriend you. May He always be above you to watch over you. And may He be within you to give you peace.

In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
