Week of October 31, 2010, Psalm 46

One of the Scriptures for Sunday is Psalm 46, a great psalm of confidence, strength, hope, and trust in God, and the promise of God’s presence with us in the storms of life.

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Dear Lord, You are my refuge and strength, always my strength and help in trouble. Help me not to be afraid, even though the very foundations of the earth, the foundations of my life give way and the mountains of strength that I relied on fall into the depths of the sea.

Lord Jesus, remind me that there is a river of life which streams from the City of God, a river that makes glad that city, where the most High dwells, and where I can always go for comfort, peace, joy. This river, Lord, brings Your cleansing, it brings Your healing, it brings You into my life in powerful ways. May I make that journey often to Your heart, Lord, in quiet and reflective times, and experience Your presence. Thanks for reminding me that You are always with me. Help me, Lord, to hear Your voice in the stillness, to realize, and to know from the depths of my being that You are God.

I praise and thank You, Lord. For You are exalted among the nations, You are exalted on the earth. Thanks, dear God Almighty, for Your presence, Your strength, like a fortress, Your peace in the raging waters of the storm, Your love and grace flowing and always experienced. AMEN.

May the Lord bless you as you go on your way. May He go before you to show you the way. May He go behind you to encourage you. May He go beside you to guide and befriend you. May He always be above you to watch over you. And may He be within you to give you peace.

In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
