Week of January 8, 2006 - Psalm 29
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is Psalm 29 - describing the power of God's voice, and then how we are to listen to that voice:
1 Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.
3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic.
5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning.
8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, "Glory!"
10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever.
11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
Dear Lord, I give You praise and thanks, for You are a mighty God, full of glory and strength. I worship You, Lord, in the splendor of Your holiness. As I reflect on Your presence in this world, and the meaning of Emmanuel – “God with us” – I am mindful of how far short I fall in holiness that You command in each of us. For Jesus, I am a sinner, and fall far short of Your glory. But You forgive, You restore, You allow each of us, and encourage each of us to come before Your throne with boldness and confidence. So I come – in the splendor of Your holiness. Change me, Lord. Mature me, Lord.
Your voice is powerful and majestic. When You spoke over the waters, Your voice thundered, and it continues to thunder and strike like lightning. Your voice brings joy and excitement and all things are changed as You speak. Speak to each of us, Lord. Bring us to You, and in Your temple let us all cry, “Glory!!!” For You are enthroned in the praises of Your people, as King forever – as King who gives strength to each of us, who blesses each of us with peace. Help me to recognize Your voice, and to listen to Your voice.
Thanks for Your joy and excitement, the desire that You place in each of us to come to You, to spend time with You, to experience Your presence. Thanks for Your love and Your peace. Amen.
May the Lord shower you with His mercy; may the light of His presence be ever your guide; may He guard you and uphold you; may His Spirit be ever by your side. May He bless Your comings in and your goings out. When you sleep, may His angels watch over you; when you wake, may He fill you with His grace. May you love Him and serve Him all your days, and then in heaven to see His face forevermore.

May our great God who speaks and we all listen, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be with us now and always.
