Week of October 25, 2009, Psalm 46

One of the Scriptures for Sunday is Psalm 46 – a great psalm that describes God’s strength and power and presence with us in the midst of trouble:
1God is our mighty fortress, always ready to help in times of trouble.
2And so, we won't be afraid! Let the earth tremble and the mountains tumble
into the deepest sea.
3Let the ocean roar and foam, and its raging waves shake the mountains.
4A river and its streams bring joy to the city, which is the sacred home of God Most High.
5God is in that city, and it won't be shaken. He will help it at dawn.
6Nations rage! Kingdoms fall! But at the voice of God the earth itself melts.
7The LORD All-Powerful is with us. The God of Jacob is our fortress.
8Come! See the fearsome things the LORD has done on earth.
9God brings wars to an end all over the world.
He breaks the arrows, shatters the spears, and burns the shields.
10Our God says, "Calm down,
and learn that I am God! All nations on earth will honor me."
11The LORD All-Powerful is with us. The God of Jacob is our fortress.

Heavenly Father –
You are our Fortress, our Rock, our Protection in times of trouble. Even though mountains shake, and oceans roar, and mountains tumble down and the earth trembles, we will not be afraid. For You are our help and You are with us. At Your voice, dear God, the earth itself melts. You are all powerful and You are with us.

You bring wars to cease. You break the arrows and shatter the spears and burn the shields. You tell us to calm down, to listen, to be silent and learn that You are God, the God that all nations on earth will honor, the All-Powerful God, the Almighty God, the God of Jacob, our fortress. And Your fantastic promise is that You are always with us.

Thanks, Lord, for Your abiding and ever-present love, Your mercy and grace, Your presence with us always. Amen.

May the Lord bless you as you go on your way. May He go before you to show you the way. May He go behind you to encourage you. May He go beside you to guide and befriend you. May He always be above you to watch over you. And may He be within you to give you peace.

In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
