Week of December 12, 2010, Psalm 146:5-10
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from Psalm 146, a prophetic section about the coming Messiah, Jesus, the Lord who comes into our midst with freedom and love.
5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God.
6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever.
7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets prisoners free,
8 the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,
the LORD loves the righteous.
9 The LORD watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10 The LORD reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the LORD.
Dear God, Your great desire was that you would come down, dwell in our midst, and be our God and we would be Your people. You have torn the heavens open and come down. You are God in our midst, incarnate, Word made flesh, Jesus Christ, a Baby and a King.
You are our help, O God of Jacob, and You are our hope. You are the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in it – all of creation. And You remain forever faithful. You set us free, Lord, free from sin, free from ourselves by Your saving grace. You give us sight, Lord, to see Your love in action, in serving others, as we see You in and through the eyes of the blind and the bowed down, the foreigner and the orphan, Your eyes in people who are hurting and in turmoil. And You give us hope and help.
Lord Jesus, You reign forever, through all generations, for all time, as the Prince of Peace, the King of kings, the Lord of lords. Thanks, Jesus, for Your love that came down, incarnate as a Baby, and yet a King. Thanks for Your peace in the midst of turmoil, a stable and a manger, amidst the poorest of the poor. And thanks for Your presence, Jesus, Emmanuel, God always with us. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
