One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from Revelation, chapter 21, verses 1-6, where the author is describing the new Jerusalem, the new home of Christians at the end of time:
1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
5He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."
6He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.
Dear Lord, thanks for Your greatness and majesty. Thanks for this vision of a new heaven and a new earth – this vision of the Holy City, prepared as a bride for the bridegroom. Thanks, Lord, for the vision to us of a Church made holy expecting. Thanks, Lord for Your abiding presence with us, Your living in our midst, even right now as well as in the future.
Jesus, there are times when I feel Your strength and comfort in the midst of pain and mourning and tears – that You are doing this right now, even as it will happen in a time to come. Help us to do the same with people, wiping away tears, bringing comfort and encouragement to others.
You are a great God, Lord – You are the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. Lord, Jesus, we thirst, and we come to the well and drink deeply of Your words, the words of eternal life, the life-giving, refreshing strength that Your word brings to us – for Jesus, You are the Word, the Word made flesh, and You do dwell with Your people. You knock and invite us to enter Your presence, and we gladly come to You to be quieted, refreshed, strengthened, comforted, empowered.
And thanks, Lord, that You do make all things new, that each new day is to be filled with thanks and praise, facing trials with courage, knowing that You live in our midst and we see our situation with fresh eyes as we rely on You.
Thanks for Your love, Lord, You dwelling with us always. Amen.
May the Lord bless you as you go on your way. May He go before you to show you the way. May He go behind you to encourage you. May He go beside you to guide and befriend you. May He always be above you to watch over you. And may He be within you to give you peace.
