Week of September 23, 1 Timothy 2:1-6
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from Paul’s first letter to Timothy, chapter 2, verses 1-6. It is an encouragement to prayer:
1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--
2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men-- the testimony given in its proper time.
Dear Lord, help me to take to heart Paul’s urging to each of us that we should bring all of our requests to You, all of our prayers to You, all of our prayers for others and prayers about difficult situations to You, all of our thanks to You. And help me Lord, to offer these prayers and situations for everyone, and about everything – to pray about all things, Lord Jesus – that the first thing I would do when faced with anything, would be to pray – to seek Your face, Jesus, to ask for help, guidance, strength, comfort. For You give all these things.
And then, help me, Lord, to pray especially for those in authority, for leaders in my church, for leaders in my area, for leaders in my state, for leaders in my country – no matter how I feel about their actions or personalities – Jesus, You simply ask me to pray for them, so I bring them before You – so that You would give them what they need, wisdom in making decisions, wisdom in listening to others, wisdom to discern Your will.
And always, Heavenly Father, remind me that the one Mediator, the One I can go to for all things, is Your Son, Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, who redeemed us, saved us from spiritual death, continues to call each of us to Himself, and fills each of us with His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, who inspires, teaches, guides, and gives us what we need in each situation to further Your Kingdom. Thanks, Jesus, for Your presence and peace, and the joy that You bring. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
