Week of May 3, 2009, John 10:11-18
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from the gospel of John, chapter 10, verses 11-18. Here John uses the image of Jesus being a Good Shepherd, and we as followers of Jesus, respond to His words and His presence: Jesus is teaching, and says:
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”
Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd, who laid down Your life for us, for each of us. Thanks for Your life on this earth, so many years ago. And thanks for Your presence with us, even right now in our midst. Thanks that You love us, that You know us, that You call us forth.
Help us, Lord, to know You as the Good Shepherd, tending and caring, leading and guiding us beside green pastures, beside calm waters, protecting, watching over, teaching us, reminding us to not be afraid no matter the circumstances of life, even through valleys of darkness and desert.
May we always have the confidence, Jesus, to trust You in all that we do, that You are always with us. Make us more aware of Your presence in our lives – always.
Thanks for Your overwhelming love, Your profound peace, Your infectious joy. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
