Week of August 6, 2006 John 6:27-35
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from John, chapter 6, verses 27-35 - where Jesus talks about us coming to Him when we are hungry and thirsty:
Jesus said:
27 “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."
28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."
30 So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
32 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
34 "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread."
35 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.
Heavenly Father – We give You thanks and praise. You gave Your seal of approval on Your Son, Jesus, who died for each of us so that we might live and have eternal life.
Father God, You gave bread from heaven to the Jewish nation as they wandered in the wilderness, manna that was sufficient for each person each day, and you gave a double portion on the weekend. It did not spoil. It was enough.
Jesus, just as You are the Bread of Life, You give us daily all that we need – strength for the day, a thankful heart for our many blessings, Your Holy Spirit that empowers us each day to believe and trust in Your Word, to respond to Your love, to reach out to others.
Help me, Lord, always to believe, to do Your work among Your people, and beyond to our neighborhoods, our workplaces, even our families.
May I always come to You, Jesus, as I hunger and thirst for Your presence in me, Your life in me that reflects out to others, Your strength in me that allows me to do the work You’ve called me to do. May I always be hungry and thirsty for You.
Thanks for Your presence and love and peace with me always. Amen.
May the love of the Lord Jesus draw us to Himself;
May the power of the Lord Jesus strengthen us in His service;
May the joy of the Lord Jesus fill our souls;
May the fire of the Holy Spirit bring comfort, guidance and fervency;
And may the blessing of the almighty and most merciful God - Creator, Word and eternal Holy Spirit - be upon us and remain with us always.
In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
