Week of September 30, 2007, Psalm 146

One of the Scripture readings for Sunday is Psalm 146 – a psalm of praise to our God, our Provider:
1 Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.
4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.
5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God,
6 the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them-- the LORD, who remains faithful forever.
7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free,
8 the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous.
9 The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10 The LORD reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD.

Dear Lord, I give You praise – with all of my heart, mind, soul and strength I give You praise. You remind me to trust in You, You only, for whenever I look to people for help, failure is the result. But my help is in You, Lord, the God of Jacob, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in the sea.

For You, Lord, uphold the cause of the oppressed. You, Lord, give food to the hungry. You, Lord, give sight to the blind. You, Lord, lift up everyone bowed down by the weight of life and the cares of the world. You, Lord, love the righteous. You, Lord, watch over the alien – those who feel as if they are in a foreign land, and You, Lord, sustain the orphans and the widows.

You are a great God, mighty in power, who knows our needs and gives us according to our needs. Most importantly, Lord God, give us a hunger and thirsting for You – and then remind us that all good gifts come from You.

Thanks for Your love that surrounds us, Your presence with us in every situation. Amen.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
