Week of May 10, 2009, John 15:1-8
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from the gospel of John, chapter 15, verses 1 to 8 – the time when Jesus was sharing with His disciples what it meant to be a disciple and where Jesus talked about the image of a vine and branches.
15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. 2 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3 You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.
Dear Lord, thanks for bringing Your word to each of us in images. Thanks that in this time of spring and regeneration and renewal that we see in the creation around us, from winter to spring, from snow to green grass and leaves again, we are reminded that You bring freshness and renewal to us also.
As the vine, Jesus, keep us entwined with You, bearing fruit, trimmed, pruned, to grow and mature, to a deeper abiding with You. Jesus, we get our life from You, just as the vine gives life to the branches. May we never be cut off from You, Lord, but always abiding with You, drawing our strength and hope from You. For You are our sustaining power and presence in all that we do.
Jesus, thanks for Your love, Your peace, Your power, Your presence with us always. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
