Week of May 24, 2009, 1 John 5:9-13, Psalm 1

Two Scripture readings for Sunday – the first is from 1 John 5:9-13 – where the writer, John, tells about God giving us eternal life, through His Son, Jesus:
9 If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. 10 Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

The second reading is the psalm for Sunday which is Psalm 1 – a psalm that tells us about choices we make - living and delighting in God’s Word, or not:
1 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
2 but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.
4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who died for us, who took our sins on Himself. Jesus, You give us eternal life, as we believe in You, as we look to You for all things, as we live in the excitement of Your presence with us each day. May we reflect on Your word, meditate on it, draw strength from it. For You, Lord Jesus, are the Word – the Word made flesh – living with us through Your Spirit – each day.

Thanks for Your love, Your peace, Your strength, Your presence with us – always. Amen.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
