Week of July 18, 2008, Psalm 86:11-17

One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from Psalm 86, verses 11 to 17:
11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.
12 I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever.
13 For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave.
14 The arrogant are attacking me, O God; a band of ruthless men seeks my life-- men without regard for you.
15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
16 Turn to me and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save the son of your maidservant.
17 Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Dear Lord, great are You, and greatly to be praised. Teach me Your way, O Lord, and I will walk in Your truth. Give me an undivided heart that I may fear Your name. I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart. I will glorify Your name forever. For Your love is great to me – to each of us, even to the ends of the world. And You have delivered me from the depths of the grave.

For You, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God. You are slow to anger, and abounding, overflowing in love and faithfulness.

Turn to me, and have mercy on me, and give me strength in the midst of stress and turmoil, for great is Your grace, and great is Your goodness. You have helped me, comforted me, and been my strength throughout many years – through all the years of my life, whether I have been aware of Your presence and love, or not.

Thanks how You provide, for Your gracious love, for Your presence with me always. Amen.

May the Lord bless you as you go on your way. May He go before you to show you the way. May He go behind you to encourage you. May He go beside you to guide and befriend you. May He always be above you to watch over you. And may He be within you to give you peace.

In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Week of July 13, 2008, Isaiah 55:10-13

One of the Scriptures for Sunday is Isaiah, chapter 55, verses 10 to 13 - where God is speaking of the importance and power of God’s Word:
10 “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
12 You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thornbush will grow the pine tree, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign, which will not be destroyed."

Heavenly Father, You are almighty and all-powerful, creator of heaven and earth. You know the earth intimately, and all that is needed to nourish it and make it productive. Just as You know the needs of Your creation, so also You know the needs that each one of us has. As rain comes down from the heavens and makes the earth bud and flourish, so also Your Word comes and nourishes us. Your Word is powerful and active and alive and accomplishes all that You want it to accomplish.

Jesus, You are the Word made flesh. You came to this earth, lived among us, died for each of us – for our sins, and rose again. May Your Word come alive in each one of us, so that we die to sin each day and rise to new life – letting go of all the briers and weeds that can accumulate, and so the seeds that have been planted in us are allowed to grow, are nourished, and then come to maturity in our journey of life and faith.

Help us to go forward in joy and be led forth in peace – Your joy and Your peace, Jesus, and Your presence with us always.

Amen.

Week of July 6, 2008, Psalm 145:8-14

One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from Psalm 145, verses 8 to 14 – a psalm of praise recognizing God as almighty and powerful, and also gracious and compassionate:
8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.
9 The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.
10 All you have made will praise you, O LORD; your saints will extol you.
11 They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might,
12 so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.
14 The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

Dear Lord, Your creation praises You, Your saints extol You. We proclaim the glory of Your kingdom and we speak of Your power and might – so everyone, everywhere may know of Your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of Your kingdom – that kingdom that is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion that has endured and continues to endure through all generations.

Heavenly Father, You are faithful to all Your promises and loving toward all You have made. You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and You are rich in love. You uphold all those who fall and lift up all who are bowed down.

Jesus, in our world today, sometimes Your kingdom feels far from us. When we see the destruction of nature, and the suffering of humanity throughout the world, we see it as a very imperfect world. And Jesus, You teach us and remind us that You are in the center of the suffering – that You suffered once for all, and You are with each of us no matter the situation and no matter the circumstances.

Thanks Jesus, for Your presence with us always, Your love that surrounds us, and Your peace fills us. Amen.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His strength and His great peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
