Week of October 30, 2005, Psalm 46
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is Psalm 46 – a psalm reminding us that God is our refuge and strength, and He is always with us.
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Dear Lord, I give You great praise, for You are my refuge and strength – always my help in trouble and turmoil. So then I will not be afraid, even though the earth give away and the mountains fall into the center of the seas, though my very foundation is crumbling around me and everything seems to be closing in on me, I will not fear.
For there is a river whose streams make glad the very city of God, the holy place where You, my Lord, the Most High dwells. You speak, and the earth melts. You are all-powerful.
And You are with me, Lord Jesus. You are at work within me. And You have worked in me and been my foundation since I was born. I may not always be aware or even concerned for You, but You bring me back – through the wars of temptations and trouble, You work.
And You remind me to be still, to be quiet, to seek Your presence, to know that You are God, that You seek and save the lost, that You are always exalted among the nations, in the heavens, on this earth. For You are my God, the Lord and King of creation, the God of Jacob, and You are my Fortress and Refuge, and You are always with me.
Thanks for Your presence, Jesus, Your strength, Your comfort and the peace that You give. Amen.
May the love of the Lord Jesus draw us to Himself;
May the power of the Lord Jesus strengthen us in His service;
May the joy of the Lord Jesus fill our souls;
May the fire of the Holy Spirit bring comfort, guidance and fervency;
And may the blessing of the almighty and most merciful God - Creator, Word and eternal Holy Spirit - be upon us and remain with us always.
In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
