Week of September 3, 2006, James 1:17-25
One of the Scriptures for Sunday is from James, chapter 1, verses 17 to 25 -
An encouragement for each of us to listen before speaking, and to be doers of the word.
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror
24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-- he will be blessed in what he does.
Heavenly Father, You are a great God, unchangeable, who brings the Word of truth into our lives – Jesus, Your only Son.
Jesus, in all I do, help me to listen before I speak, slow before I speak, and slow to anger. Through all of this, Jesus, may I lead the kind of life You desire, a righteous life, a life centered in Your word, centered in Your life, so that I hear Your word, and then do what it says to do.
For Your word, Lord, brings joy and freedom. It brings healing. It reflects Your love and fills me with hope.
Thanks for Your love, Your peace, Your presence – with me always. Amen.
May the Lord bless you as you go on your way. May He go before you to show you the way. May He go behind you to encourage you. May He go beside you to guide and befriend you. May He always be above you to watch over you. And may He be within you to give you peace.
